So, for any right-angled triangle with sides of length, a, b and c, where c is the hypotenuse, then what Pythagoras’s theorem is saying, is that:

The square of the hypotenuse: c2 is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides: = a2 + b2.

Hence, the well-known formula:

This equation means that if you know the lengths of any two of the sides, you can work out the length of the third.

For example, to work out the length of the hypotenuse, c, we can rewrite the theorem by taking the square root of each side:
